Request a Concrete QuoteWhy concrete is the foundation of a good Cache Valley build
The foundation is the part of the home you never see and never want to think about again. Done right, it holds the structure level for generations. Done poorly — mix below spec, rebar in the wrong place, no waterproofing — and you get cracks, water in the basement, and expensive repairs.
HRF Customs self-performs structural concrete on most of our custom homes. We know the engineer's details before we form, we order mix designs matched to the application, and we don't pour when conditions aren't right. The concrete phase sets the tolerances every later trade has to live with — framing, finish, the whole project.
We also work as a standalone concrete contractor for other builders across Cache Valley. See our excavation and framing services for the structural picture before and after concrete.

Concrete is where blueprints meet the ground
A foundation that's out of square forces every later trade to compensate. A wall that's out of plumb means the framing absorbs the error. Concrete done right is the cheapest thing you'll do on a custom home.
Square, plumb, and level
We verify diagonals before pouring, set anchor bolts off real layout (not guesses), and finish the top of stem walls flat. Framing crews can lay a sill plate and start cutting without spending a day shimming.
Architectural flatwork
Driveways, patios, and exterior stairs that are exposed to view get the same care as structural work. Exposed aggregate, broom finish, stamped patterns, and board-formed walls when the architect calls for them.
Drainage and waterproofing detailed properly
Spring runoff in Cache Valley puts pressure on every foundation wall and slab. The waterproofing system has to be right the first time — you can't fix it after backfill.
Exterior waterproofing
Below-grade walls get a rubberized membrane and dimpled drain board before backfill. Water hits the drain board and runs down to the footing drains instead of finding its way through hairline cracks in the concrete.
Footing drains and pipes
Slotted pipe in washed rock at the footing, daylighted or connected to a sump where slope doesn't allow. The whole system has to evacuate water faster than spring melt can deliver it.

Foundation that stays dry
How a concrete phase runs on a Cache Valley custom home
Layout through curing, here's what each step looks like.
Precise formwork layout
Bench and hillside lots in Logan and the Wellsville foothills need formwork that steps the grade exactly to plan. We layout off the engineered drawings and verify diagonals before any concrete is ordered.
Rebar reinforcement detailing
We follow the structural engineer's rebar schedule and over-tie connections that will see hydrostatic pressure from spring snowmelt. Inspectors get clean walks because the steel is where it's supposed to be.
Mix design and quality control
Mix design is matched to the application — higher PSI for foundations under heavy custom homes, fiber-reinforced mixes for flatwork. We monitor slump and air content on every load and reject what doesn't meet spec.
Continuous monolithic pours
Cold joints are weak points. On large footprints we coordinate multiple pump trucks and continuous delivery so the pour stays monolithic and the structure acts as one.
Controlled curing
Concrete needs to cure above freezing. In winter we use ground heat and insulated blankets; in summer we manage evaporation with curing compounds. Either way, the concrete reaches design strength.
Concrete FAQs for Logan and Cache Valley
Straightforward answers about mix design, winter pours, and how we keep concrete from cracking where it shouldn't.
Why is structural concrete critical for mountain builds?
On bench and hillside lots, the foundation has to hold the weight of the home, the lateral pressure of the soil, and the hydrostatic pressure of spring runoff all at the same time. Under-spec'd concrete eventually cracks and leaks. Built right the first time, it lasts.
What's the difference between structural and architectural concrete?
Structural is the hidden work — footings, stem walls, slabs, retaining walls. Architectural is exposed — stamped patios, polished interior floors, board-formed walls. We handle both, and we coordinate them so transitions read cleanly.
Can you pour concrete in the Cache Valley winter?
Yes, with the right setup. We use ground heat, insulated blankets, and hot-water mixes when temperatures drop. Concrete that freezes before reaching design strength is permanently weakened, so we don't cut corners on winter protection.
Do you build exterior retaining walls?
Yes. We engineer and pour reinforced concrete retaining walls for hillside lots in Logan, Hyrum, Wellsville, and the Brigham bench. Walls are detailed with French drains and waterproofing so they stay dry on the inside face.
How do you control where concrete cracks?
All concrete shrinks and eventually cracks — the goal is to control where. We saw-cut control joints within 12 hours of finishing, use fiber-reinforced mixes where appropriate, and detail rebar around openings to direct stress.
